So I’ve been emailing/talking to Dr D for a week or so, seems like a nice guy. From Texas originally, tall, has his PHd, works in immunology. Runs Marathons, very active etc. Made plans to grab dinner Monday night.
He doesn’t drive, b/c he has bad night vision, so I met him at the Metro in Silver Spring as he lives in DC. As I was parking my car he told me where he’d be, and said he was the tall guy standing by the lightpost with a cane. Kind of thought it strange, but thought maybe he just injured himself running?
Uhhh no. When he said he had bad night vision, he meant he was legally blind at night. Complete with walking stick and magnifying reader. I found him and really I could have been anyone, since all he can see are lights.
We used his handheld GPS system to walk to the restaurant, which basically had us walk in a huge circle. I tried to tell him otherwise, since I could see the street signs, but we had to follow the GPS directions. And the guy didn’t actually use his walking stick, just held onto me the entire time.
I’m not a fan of PDAs, but I don’t mind some hugging etc. However, whenever we got to a cross walk and it was red he kept hugging on me and kissing my forehead. I felt bad but couldn’t really let him go or he might get hit by a car!
Also, some of you may know, but I hurt my knee a couple weeks ago. But because I was being vain I ddin’t wear my knee brace. So this guy is holding on to me, making me walk out of my way and I’m trying not to limp.
So we finally get to the restaurant, and I’m thinking, ok, he’ll be able to see in here. Mmm not so much. Walking through the place he is bumping into chairs etc. Once we sit down he pulls out his magnifying reader to look at the menu, etc.
Sidenote- by no means am I trying to make fun of this guy for his blindness, or anyone for that matter. it was just so unexpected and caught me off guard that its hysterically funny to me.
The saving grace of dinner was the food yummy. He proceeded to drone on and on about his job, animal testing and being a vegatarian. No questions were asked about me at all. Once the check came I asked if he wanted $ for the bill, he didn’t really give me a yes or no, more of a “if you want to I don’t mind, but if you don’t that’s ok too” So I finally just gave him a ten. I had to add the tip and total it for him. The guy left barely 15%, so since he couldn’t see me I left extra money for the waitress on the table.
So now dinner is over, what next? I originally had told him I could hang out until 10:30 or so, because that’s when my brothers hockey game was over. Well, its only 9:15 or so, and I didn’t want to be walking all over the place. SO yes, I faked a phone call from my brother that his hockey was cancelled and I had to pick him up. First time I’ve had to do that, ha. Dropped him off at the metro and went on my way to Kyle’s game. Which btw, the opposing team was a bunch of firefighters, so at least ended the night happily.
